Part of the Canadian Provincial Curriculum Alignment series.
A three-book Canadian financial-literacy workbook series by Michael McCracken: Book 1 — The Money Starter Pack (foundations, suggested Grades 6–9), Book 2 — The Grind (paycheques, taxes, credit, investing; Grades 9–12), Book 3 — Endgame (advanced planning; senior grades/adult). Print workbooks, 8.5×11, greyscale, with write-in activities throughout. Financial Education (Éducation financière) has been a compulsory Secondary V course since 2017 — the strongest single-course anchor in Canada. This mapping addresses the English sector.
Quebec’s compulsory Secondary V Financial Education course is organized around three financial issues: consuming goods and services, entering the workforce, and pursuing an education. The series maps to all three, and its tax chapters explicitly flag Quebec differences.
How The Money Skill Tree maps to the Quebec curriculum
| Provincial/territorial anchor | Coverage in The Money Skill Tree (Canadian Edition) |
|---|---|
| Consuming goods and services — budgeting, credit, debt, consumer choices and protection | B1 Ch 3 (needs vs. wants, unit pricing, sales tax incl. Quebec’s ~15% combined rate), Ch 9 (budget), Ch 10 (debt and credit cost); B2 Ch 5 (credit files and scores), Ch 11 (social spending pressure), Ch 12 (fraud self-defence) |
| Entering the workforce — pay, deductions, taxation of income | B2 Ch 1 (pay stub anatomy; commission, piecework, tips, contract income), Ch 2 (deductions and brackets — includes a dedicated “Quebec: Different Deductions” section covering QPP and QPIP and the TP-1015.3 form), Ch 4 (filing a first return) |
| Pursuing an education — financing post-secondary studies | B2 Ch 3 (RESP and the education-savings grant mechanics), B1 Ch 7 (compound growth on long-horizon savings), Ch 10 (student debt as strategic vs. consumer borrowing) |
| Secondary IV–V mathematics — financial mathematics content (CST pathway) | B1 Ch 7 (simple vs. compound interest, Rule of 72 with practice set); B2 Ch 5 (loan amortization comparisons); B3 Ch 8 (savings-rate mathematics) |
B1 = Book 1 (The Money Starter Pack) · B2 = Book 2 (The Grind) · B3 = Book 3 (Endgame) · “Ch” = chapter.
Instructional features
Every chapter closes with a hands-on Skill Quest and Elite Quest (write-in activities with worked examples), Guild Chat discussion prompts (adaptable to pair-share or guest-speaker formats), a SOLO reflection prompt, and a self-assessment Summary Checklist. All dollar figures, tax rates, and contribution limits reflect 2026 published values, with in-text reminders to verify current rates at canada.ca.
Scope
Scope notes. (1) The series is currently English-language — suited to Quebec’s English sector; a French edition would be required for the francophone network. (2) Quebec-specific content already present: the QPP/QPIP deductions section, Desjardins in the banking chapter, Quebec tax brackets and sales-tax rate in worked examples. (3) Federal account limits (TFSA/RRSP/RESP) apply in Quebec and are covered as such.
